About us

The newly Aston Humanist Society (founded in spring 2009) is for people interested in discussing profound questions in the realms of philosophy, politics, science, religion and history. The group's aim is to organise activities, such as forums for discussion, guest speakers and debates, and provide a focus for students who wish to discuss and learn more about the world around them.

You can read about how and why the humanist society was started at Aston here.

You may or may not be religious or call yourself a humanist/atheist/agnostic/skeptic/rationalist but if you:
- like meeting new people with different views
- enjoy thinking for yourself and having topical discussions about things concerning the world around you
- want to promote values such as freedom of expression, and the importance of scientific and personal inquiry
- are from the Birmingham area
... then the Aston Humanist Society is for you!

It is absolutely not an 'anti-theist' society; those with religious beliefs are very welcome to join! The main objective of the group is to provide a forum for discussion so that people can express their ideas and opinions on things that interest them. Members can nominate a topic on anything that they wish by emailing astonhumanistsociety@gmail.com or coming along to meetings.

Membership is £5 and runs for a duration of the academic year .

Weekly meetings will be held on Thursdays at 7pm in the Presentation Suite on the second floor of the Aston University Student’s Guild, , although there will be regular socials in pubs around Birmingham city centre and we join the Birmingham Skeptics in the Pub once a month too.

All the scheduled events will go up on the public Aston Humanist Society Google Calendar. To make things easy, there will be a handy button which will automatically add all our upcoming events to your diaries!
